Abdias

Abdias is a form of Obadiah, the Hebrew name meaning “servant of Yahweh.” It belongs to the history of biblical translation, with the Abdias spelling appearing in Latin tradition and related forms used in Spanish and other languages. The prophet Obadiah gives this name family its best-known scriptural association.

The Book of Obadiah is one of the twelve books traditionally called the Minor Prophets, a designation based on their length rather than their importance. Choosing Abdias can preserve the form used in a family’s Bible or religious community while connecting with the same prophet known as Obadiah in many English editions. Spanish Abdías marks the stressed vowel with an accent; Abdias is also encountered without it in English-language records and other writing conventions.
