Abilene

Abilene began as a place name rather than a biblical woman’s name. The Gospel of Luke mentions the ancient district of Abilene, whose name is connected with Abila and a Semitic place-name element often understood as a meadow or grassy plain. Its later use for American towns helped bring the name into English-speaking family life.

Abilene, Kansas, is associated with Dwight D. Eisenhower’s childhood, while Abilene, Texas, gives it another distinct American geographical connection. Literature supplies a given-name example in Abilene, the child in Kate DiCamillo’s The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane. These layers offer several possible reasons for choosing the name: scripture, a family place, or a book. Its history is richer than treating it simply as another form of Abigail.
