Acacia

Acacia is a botanical name that comes through Latin from Greek akakia, the name of a thorny tree. Its deeper word history is associated with a point or thorn. As a given name, Acacia belongs with names taken directly from plants, but it refers to a broad tree and shrub group rather than to a single flower variety.

The Australian wattles provide a particularly vivid connection. Golden wattle, Acacia pycnantha, is Australia’s national floral emblem and is known for its clusters of yellow flowers. Other acacias have their own forms and habitats, so the name can hold different landscape associations for different families. For parents seeking a nature name, Acacia offers both a recognizable botanical identity and a route into the history of the word used for it.
