Ada

Ada has distinct histories in different languages. In the European name family that includes Adelaide, it connects with a Germanic element meaning “noble.” In Turkish, ada means “island.” Those meanings should be understood separately rather than combined into a single phrase.

Mathematician Ada Lovelace is a notable bearer, and Ada also appears in literature, including Dickens’s Bleak House. English speakers commonly say AY-duh, while a Turkish pronunciation has different vowel sounds. Its three letters make Ada compact enough to use without a nickname. A family choosing the name may be drawn to a historical namesake, a language connection, or simply the balance of its two syllables.
