Adalia

Adalia has two histories that are best kept distinct. As a feminine elaboration of Adela or Adele, it belongs to the Germanic family associated with nobility. A separate Adalia appears in the Book of Esther as a son of Haman. That biblical name may be Persian in origin, and its literal meaning is uncertain.

The matching English spelling does not require a family choosing the Adela-related name to intend the biblical figure. Conversely, the ancient occurrence gives the spelling a history beyond its modern feminine use. Knowing which tradition matters to the family helps explain the choice more accurately: one route has a clear connection with Adela, while the other preserves an old name whose derivation is no longer securely known.
