Adriano

Adriano continues the Latin name Hadrianus, which identified someone associated with Hadria, an ancient Italian place name. Adrian is its familiar English relative. The history is geographical, and the name’s connection with the Adriatic region does not make dark or water its securely established literal meaning.

Roman emperor Hadrian is the most famous ancient bearer of the wider name family, remembered in Britain through Hadrian’s Wall. The form Adriano has its own later life in Italian and Portuguese, including singer and actor Adriano Celentano and Brazilian footballer Adriano. Its final o follows the naming conventions of those languages rather than functioning as a decorative addition to Adrian. Families can choose it for that linguistic connection or as an international way to honor an Adrian.
