Adrienne

Adrienne is the French feminine form of Adrian, from the Latin Hadrianus, meaning “from Adria.” The name began with a geographical reference to an ancient place, which gives the wider Adrian family its historical background. Adrienne carries that same meaning in an established French form.

Poet Adrienne Rich is a notable bearer, providing a substantial literary connection. Adriana is a related option with a final a, while Adrienne gives the name a different written shape and rhythm. Both can honor an Adrian-family name without being identical spellings. Adrienne's history across French and English-speaking settings gives parents several familiar cultural reference points while leaving room for a personal family association.
