Aleksandr

Aleksandr is a form of Alexander especially familiar in Russian naming traditions. The older Greek name Alexandros combines an element meaning to defend with one referring to men or people. Its protective meaning is shared with Alexander, while the spelling reflects the way the name has been carried into a different language.

The form also appears in countries including Armenia, Estonia, and Kazakhstan, although each community brings its own pronunciation and naming practices. Aleksandr retains the full historical name rather than functioning as an invented shortening. For parents comparing international forms, the final cluster without the e of Alexander is a useful distinguishing feature, particularly when continuing a spelling already used by relatives.
