Ally

Ally is a familiar form used for several longer names, including Alison and Alexandra. Those names have different histories: Alison belongs to the Alice family and its nobility root, while Alexandra carries the Greek idea of defending people. Ally’s inherited meaning therefore depends on which longer name, if any, stands behind it.

Allie is a close spelling alternative, and either form can be chosen as a complete given name. The spelling Ally also matches the English word for a friend or supporter, though that word is usually pronounced differently from the nickname. That visible association can add a personal layer without replacing the longer name’s history, giving Ally both a familiar naming role and an everyday English connection.
