Alpha

Alpha is the name of the first letter in the Greek alphabet. Its position has given the word a broader association with beginnings, first stages, and things that lead a sequence. The Greek letter itself developed from an older Semitic letter name, showing that even this very short choice carries a history of writing across languages.

In Christian scripture, Alpha appears with Omega, the final Greek letter, as an image of the beginning and the end. Astronomy also uses Greek letters to label stars, although an alpha designation does not invariably identify a constellation’s brightest star. As a personal name, Alpha can reflect one of these specific interests or the simple idea of a beginning. The name’s history is broader than modern social labels built around the word.
