Amaia

Amaia is a Basque name meaning the end. Its literary history is connected with Francisco Navarro-Villoslada’s novel Amaya, or the Basques in the Eighth Century, whose title character appears as Amaia in Basque. That specific language and literary background is more informative than combining it with unrelated Japanese or geographical meanings.

Amaya is a closely related spelling, while Mai can be a personal shortening. The sequence of vowels is worth saying aloud with the surname, especially in a multilingual family. Parents may appreciate the Basque connection or the literary story without treating the word end as a prediction about a child’s life or personality.
