America

America is a geographic name whose history is connected with Amerigo Vespucci, the Italian explorer. The Latinized form of his first name helped shape the name applied to the newly mapped lands across the Atlantic. As a personal name, America can therefore carry both a place association and a distant connection with an older European given name.

The meaning of the place word varies with context: America may refer to the United States in everyday English, while the Americas encompasses a much larger region. Actress America Ferrera is a familiar bearer, and América is a Spanish spelling with an accent marking the stress. For a family, the name may express a particular geographic, cultural, or personal connection rather than a single political message.
