Amiel

Amiel is a form of the Hebrew biblical name Ammiel, traditionally interpreted as God is my kinsman. Its elements concern people or kinship and El, a word for God. The name therefore expresses a relationship with the divine through the language of family and community, rather than simply adding a general blessing to a person's name.

Several people called Ammiel appear in the Hebrew Bible, so the name is not tied to only one story. One is identified as the father of Machir, who sheltered Mephibosheth in the account involving King David. Amiel keeps a shorter English-letter spelling, and Ami can serve as a familiar form while retaining the opening of the full name.
