Andromeda

Andromeda comes from Greek elements associated with a man and with thinking, providing for, or protecting. The precise combined interpretation varies, but its mythological identity is clear: Andromeda is the daughter of Cassiopeia and Cepheus who is rescued by Perseus from a sea monster.

The story gives its name to a constellation, and the Andromeda Galaxy is named for its apparent position within that area of the sky. A constellation is a pattern of stars, while the galaxy is a vast separate stellar system, so the two astronomical associations are distinct. For parents, Andromeda brings together classical storytelling and astronomy in one established name. Andie offers a familiar shorter form while leaving the full name’s longer, dramatic shape available.
