Antonio

Antonio is an Italian and Spanish form of Antonius, an ancient Roman family name whose original meaning is unknown. Popular translations such as “priceless” or “from Antium” should not be treated as established explanations. The name’s long history is clearer than its oldest etymology.

Shakespeare used Antonio for several characters, including the merchant in The Merchant of Venice. Tonio and Tony offer shorter everyday forms, while Anthony and Antony are related English names. Pronunciation varies between Italian, Spanish, and English, particularly around the final -nio. Families using Antonio to honor an Anthony can preserve the same historical name connection while choosing the form that fits their language or family tradition.
