Arion

Arion is an ancient Greek name best known through stories rather than a securely established literal meaning. One bearer was the poet and musician Arion of Methymna, whom ancient accounts credit with an important role in the development of the dithyramb. Herodotus also tells the famous story of a dolphin carrying him to safety after danger at sea.

A separate Arion, often written Areion, is the extraordinary horse of Greek mythology associated with Poseidon and Demeter. These are different figures sharing related written forms, not one combined story. The name therefore offers both musical and mythological connections. Parents considering Arion can choose the association that matters to them, with the poet offering a musical story and the horse providing a separate connection to Greek myth.
