Arius

Arius is the Latinized form of the Greek name Areios, associated with Ares, the Greek god of war. Warlike is a conventional interpretation of that connection. The name belongs to the classical Greek and Latin world, although its best-known historical bearer is remembered for theology rather than military activity.

Arius was a Christian priest associated with Alexandria in the fourth century. The teachings linked with him became central to the controversy known as Arianism, an important dispute in early Christian history. That association gives the name a distinctive religious and intellectual background, which some families may want to consider alongside its classical sound. The historical name is separate from the musical word aria, despite their similar appearance.
