Ashanti

Ashanti is an English form of Asante, the name of a people and kingdom in what is now Ghana. It refers to a specific Akan cultural and historical identity rather than to Africa as a whole. As a personal name, it may express a family’s connection with that heritage or an interest in the history carried by the name.

The Asante are associated with traditions including kente weaving and the Golden Stool, a central symbol of the nation. Singer Ashanti helped make the name familiar to a wider international audience, but the people and their history long predate that modern association. Choosing Ashanti can therefore involve more than an attractive sound: the name carries a living cultural identity, with Asante remaining an important related form.
