Asia

Asia is best known as the name of the continent, with a history reaching back through ancient Greek geographical usage. The ultimate derivation of that place name is uncertain. Its familiar modern use as a personal name can express a geographical connection, while the meaning living belongs to the separate Arabic name Aisha.

Asia also appears in Greek mythology as one of the Oceanids, with different genealogical traditions attaching her to other figures. Italian filmmaker and actress Asia Argento is a recognizable modern bearer. Pronunciation differs by language: the common English form sounds different from the Italian one. Families choosing Asia may therefore be drawing on geography, mythology, or a namesake, without needing to assign it Aisha’s unrelated meaning.
