Astoria

Astoria is a place name connected with the surname Astor and the legacy of businessman John Jacob Astor. The Queens neighborhood and the Waldorf Astoria hotel are familiar associations, giving the name an urban and architectural character. Its ending makes it sound like a long-established personal name, but its clearest route into naming is through places and a family surname.

For parents, that distinction offers several possible personal connections: a neighborhood, a visit, a family memory, or simply the sound of the place name. The older meaning of Astor is less secure than those documented associations, so Astoria is best understood first as a geographical and historical choice. It brings a full four-syllable rhythm to the tradition of using places as first names.
