Athalia

Athalia is a form of Athaliah, a Hebrew biblical name often explained as Yahweh is exalted, although the first element is uncertain. The ending belongs to the group of Hebrew names containing a reference to the divine name. Athalia keeps that structure while using a spelling also familiar through later European religious and literary traditions.

The biblical Athaliah was a queen of Judah whose reign is described in a violent dynastic story. Her narrative should be understood honestly rather than reduced either to a flattering royal image or a judgment about a modern child. Later works, including Handel’s oratorio Athalia, brought the figure into music. Parents considering the name can weigh its traditional religious interpretation and artistic history alongside the difficult story associated with its best-known ancient bearer.
