Audra

Audra has two distinct histories. In English, it is related to Audrey, the modern descendant of an Old English name combining “noble” and “strength.” In Lithuanian, audra is the word for a storm and is used as a name in its own right. The two routes should be understood separately rather than combined into one invented translation.

Singer and actor Audra McDonald provides a familiar English-language example. The Lithuanian pronunciation begins with a vowel sound closer to the English word “ow,” whereas English Audra is commonly heard with the opening sound of Audrey. That difference matters for families connecting the name with Lithuanian heritage. Either way, the short written form carries a fuller history than its five letters might suggest.
