Avigail

Avigail is a Hebrew form of the name known in English as Abigail. Its elements refer to a father and joy, producing the familiar interpretation “my father is joy.” In the biblical narrative, Abigail is remembered for her wisdom and becomes a wife of David, giving the name a specific woman and story as well as a positive literal meaning.

The v in Avigail reflects the Hebrew form more directly than the b of the traditional English spelling. That distinction can matter to a family who wants to preserve a Hebrew name while still keeping a connection recognizable to English-speaking relatives. Avigail and Abigail belong to the same name family, with the chosen spelling carrying an additional layer of language and heritage.
