Avrum

Avrum is a Yiddish form associated with Avraham, the Hebrew name known in English as Abraham. The traditional meaning “father of many” comes from the biblical explanation of Abraham’s name and his role as an ancestor of nations. Avrum preserves that scriptural connection while reflecting the sound and usage of Ashkenazi Jewish communities.

A name recorded as Abraham in an English document may have been Avrum in family conversation, making the form particularly meaningful in genealogy or when honoring a relative. The relationship between formal and familiar forms can vary from one household to another. Parents choosing Avrum can make the Yiddish part of the family history visible, while the connection with Avraham keeps the older Hebrew and biblical background close at hand.
