Azrael

Azrael is associated with Hebrew elements meaning help and God. It is also known in Jewish and Muslim traditions as a name for the angel of death. That religious association is part of its cultural history, while its literal name elements express help rather than the word death itself.

Azriel is a closely related form to compare, but Aziel and Azael should not automatically be treated as alternate spellings with identical meanings. The sequence of vowels can lead to different English pronunciations, making the family's intended sound useful to share. Choosing Azrael may reflect a religious, literary, or personal connection, each of which deserves its own explanation.
