Barbara

Barbara comes from a Greek word describing a foreign or non-Greek-speaking woman. That historical meaning reflects an ancient language distinction rather than a judgment about the person who carries the name today. The name became familiar through Christian saintly tradition and has accumulated literary and cultural associations over many centuries.

Barb, Babs, and Barbie offer notably different short forms, while Barbra is a related spelling that shortens the written name. The full Barbara may have two or three spoken syllables depending on the accent. Parents considering it as an honor name can preserve a relative’s form while choosing the everyday nickname that feels most natural in their own household.
