Bernadette

Bernadette is a French feminine form of Bernard, combining older Germanic elements for a bear and bravery or strength. The bear belongs to the name’s historical construction, while the familiar “ette” ending marks the feminine form. Its meaning is more specific than a general description of courage without a name-family connection.

Saint Bernadette of Lourdes gives the name an important Catholic association, and performer Bernadette Peters supplies a familiar theatrical one. Bernie is a possible shortening, although the full name has a distinct rhythm and final stress. Parents may value the religious history, an older family connection, or the substantial formal name alongside its much briefer everyday option.
