Blaise

Blaise is the French form of the Roman name Blasius, traditionally connected with a Latin word describing a lisp or stammer. Its sound may suggest the English word “blaze,” but fire is an association rather than the historical meaning. The name has a long religious history through Saint Blaise, remembered particularly in traditions concerning the throat.

Another notable bearer is Blaise Pascal, the French mathematician and philosopher. These connections give a short, energetic name considerable depth. Blaise usually needs no nickname, and its single syllable can balance a longer surname. Blas and Biagio are related Spanish and Italian forms; Blaze is better treated as a separate word name.
