Brielle

Brielle can be a shortened form of Gabrielle, carrying the Hebrew name family’s meaning “God is my strength.” Although its sound may seem recent, the contraction has a history in Cajun naming. It can now stand as a full first name, rather than requiring Gabrielle on a birth certificate.

There is also a Dutch town called Brielle, known as Brill. A family choosing the name for that place has a different connection from someone using it to honor a Gabrielle; the place should not be assigned the Hebrew meaning automatically. Brielle is usually pronounced bree-EL in English, with emphasis on the end. Briella adds another syllable and offers a related, more extended form.
