Bruce

Bruce comes from a surname associated with Brix in Normandy. Its Scottish connection is especially strong through the family of Robert the Bruce, but the surname’s place-name route should be distinguished from a definite literal meaning such as brushwood. The older place-name interpretation is less secure than the family’s documented geographical history.

Bruce Lee and Bruce Springsteen provide different cultural associations, while Bruce Wayne offers a fictional one. The full name has one syllable and usually needs no shortening, though Brucie can be affectionate. Families choosing Bruce for Scottish heritage can appreciate the Norman background as part of how surnames traveled between countries.
