Caeli

Caeli is a grammatical form of the Latin word caelum, meaning sky or heaven. In a phrase such as Regina Caeli, it means of heaven. That gives the modern personal name a direct celestial connection, although Caeli was not simply an ancient Roman girl’s name with the same history as Julia or Claudia.

Regina Caeli is a traditional Christian title and prayer associated with Mary, so some families may choose Caeli through that religious expression. Others may be drawn to the sky image itself. Pronunciation varies with classical Latin, church Latin, and modern family use; the English spelling alone does not establish one universally correct personal pronunciation. Caeli can therefore carry a precise Latin meaning while still having a newer life as a given name.
