Caelum

Caelum is a Latin word for the sky or heaven, which gives the name a direct celestial association. It is also the name of a small southern constellation. In that astronomical name, however, a separate Latin word for a chisel is intended, and the constellation represents an engraver’s or sculptor’s tool.

That double history can be particularly appealing to a family interested in both language and astronomy. The constellation was introduced by Nicolas-Louis de Lacaille, whose southern-sky names often commemorate instruments. Caelum resembles Scottish Callum in English spelling, but Callum comes through Columba and has a different origin. Parents choosing Caelum can preserve either the Latin sky association or the specific constellation story while keeping the distinction clear.
