Calix

Calix matches the Latin word for a cup or drinking vessel, the word behind English “chalice.” It can also be used as a shortened form of Calixtus, a name associated with the Greek Callistus and the meaning “most beautiful.” Those are two different routes into the name rather than parts of one combined definition.

The cup association can give Calix a ceremonial or spiritual resonance, while its compact form and final x feel quite different from the longer Calixtus. The similar-looking botanical word calyx refers to the outer parts of a flower and has its own linguistic history. For parents, choosing Calix may therefore involve deciding whether the attraction is the cup meaning, the older personal-name family, or simply the concise sound.
