Canaan

Canaan names an ancient region of the eastern Mediterranean and appears throughout the Hebrew Bible. It is also the name of a son of Ham and grandson of Noah in Genesis. The place is associated with the land promised to the Israelites, but “Promised Land” describes its biblical role rather than translating the name itself.

The older etymology remains disputed; interpretations involving lowland or lowness should be treated as proposals. Canaan has a familiar two-syllable shape in English, despite its unusual sequence of vowels. Families may appreciate its substantial scriptural background or geographical character. It is worth distinguishing it from Cain, which is a separate biblical name with a different history and meaning.
