Carmela

Carmela is an Italian and Spanish form related to Carmel, from Hebrew vocabulary for a garden, orchard, or vineyard. The name also connects with Mount Carmel and the Catholic title Our Lady of Mount Carmel. That religious history explains much of its use as a personal name, alongside the appealing cultivated-landscape meaning.

Carmella is a familiar spelling with an additional l, while Carmel is a shorter related choice. Carmie and Mel can serve as informal forms. Television viewers may recognize Carmela Soprano, but the name’s history extends far beyond that fictional character. Parents choosing Carmela may be honoring a faith tradition, a family member, or its garden meaning, and the full three-syllable form gives each of those connections room to stand.
