Cassia

Cassia has both botanical and Roman naming connections. As a plant word, it is associated with the aromatic bark sold as cassia cinnamon. As an ancient personal name, it can be the feminine form of Cassius, a Roman family name whose deeper meaning is usually linked, with some uncertainty, to the Latin word for “empty” or “hollow.”

The botanical association gives Cassia a warm spice image, while the Roman route places it alongside names such as Cassius and Cassian. They are different histories that happen to meet in the same spelling. Parents may also encounter both “KASS-ee-ah” and a more compressed “KASH-ah” pronunciation in English. Choosing the intended sound early helps keep this short written form clear in everyday introductions.
