Cassiel

Cassiel belongs to the history of angel names in medieval religious and mystical writings. It is generally connected with the Hebrew form Qaftsi’el, although the full meaning is uncertain. The final element refers to God, as it does in many Hebrew names. Associations with Saturn and Saturday belong to particular traditions about the angel, rather than providing a secure literal translation of the name.

The name also has a place in modern storytelling through the angel Cassiel in Wim Wenders’s Wings of Desire. That film gives it an artistic association beyond the older texts. For parents drawn to angel names, Cassiel offers a different history from the familiar biblical Michael or Gabriel: its strongest background is in later angelic traditions, with a meaning that deserves to remain qualified.
