Catarina

Catarina is the Portuguese form of Katherine, a name with an uncertain deeper origin that became traditionally associated with the Greek word for pure. It has a long history in Portugal and Brazil, where it is a familiar full name rather than a modern alternate spelling.

Saint Catherine of Alexandria helped spread the wider name family through Christian Europe, while each language developed its own forms. Italian Caterina changes the middle vowel, and Spanish Catalina changes a consonant, making them useful comparisons for families with multilingual connections. Catarina preserves a clear four-syllable rhythm. It can honor a Catherine or Katherine while using a form tied specifically to Portuguese language and family tradition.
