Cattleya

Cattleya is a botanical name taken from a genus of orchids known for large, colorful flowers. Botanist John Lindley named the genus in honor of English horticulturist William Cattley. It therefore has both a flower association and a commemorative surname origin; it does not literally translate as “beautiful flower” in an ancient language.

As a given name, Cattleya keeps the distinctive spelling of the orchid genus. Cataleya is a related personal-name spelling, while Cat and Leya offer shorter everyday forms. Parents interested in gardening may particularly appreciate the precise plant connection. Because the consonant combination is less familiar than those in names such as Lily or Rose, introducing the preferred pronunciation can help others recognize the name beyond its botanical setting.
