Celia

Celia belongs to the Latin Caelius name family and is traditionally linked with caelum, meaning “heaven” or “sky.” It can also serve as a shortened form of Cecilia, but that is a separate route: Cecilia comes from a different Roman family name. The two names’ similar sounds therefore do not establish an identical meaning.

Literature gives Celia an unusually rich set of associations. Shakespeare used it for Rosalind’s cousin in As You Like It, and Ben Jonson addressed a Celia in his poetry. George Eliot later included Celia Brooke in Middlemarch. These appearances make it an established literary name without tying every bearer to a single character or work.
