Chana

Chana is a Hebrew form of the name also written Channah and Hannah, from a root associated with grace or favor. Its biblical connection is Hannah, the mother of Samuel. The meaning concerns favor or graciousness; it is not a separate promise about physical elegance or the personality of a child.

The initial ch represents a Hebrew sound that differs from the ordinary English ch in words such as chair. That is one reason Hannah and Chana can look more different than their shared origin suggests. Families may use different transliterations and pronunciations according to their language tradition. Chana preserves a recognizable Hebrew form while belonging to the same established name family as Hannah.
