Chava

Chava is a Hebrew form of the name known in English as Eve. Its traditional meaning is connected with life and living, fitting the biblical account in which Eve is described as the mother of all living. The name has continued in Jewish naming traditions rather than existing only as a historical biblical form.

The opening sound is important: the ch represents a Hebrew throat sound, not the ch of English chair. Spellings such as Hava or Chavah reflect different ways of representing the original letters. Chava also appears in Jewish literature and storytelling, including Sholem Aleichem’s Tevye stories and their musical adaptation, Fiddler on the Roof. Those associations give the name both scriptural depth and a recognizable cultural life.
