Chelsea

Chelsea comes from an English place name traditionally explained as a landing place for chalk or limestone. The London district is its most familiar geographical association, while other places also bear the name. Its meaning belongs to that place-name history rather than to the football club or public figures who later made the spelling familiar.

Chelsea Clinton and the song Chelsea Morning provide recognizable modern associations. Chels is an informal short form, with Chelsey and Chelsie available as spelling alternatives. The name has two syllables and a familiar soft ending. Parents choosing it for a particular location can preserve that story, while those drawn to the sound need not share every cultural association attached to the place.
