Chet

Chet is an established short form of Chester, a name that began with English places whose names preserve Latin vocabulary for a camp or fort. The shorter form keeps the beginning of Chester while dropping its final syllable. It has also been used as a complete given name, without an official longer version.

Guitarist Chet Atkins and jazz musician Chet Baker give the name particularly strong musical associations. These bearers make its history more specific than simply calling it an old-fashioned nickname. For a family with a Chester namesake, Chet offers a direct familiar connection; for others, it can stand on its own. Similar-looking names in other languages require their own explanations rather than sharing this English derivation automatically.
