Chevelle

Chevelle entered modern naming through a Chevrolet car model, the Chevelle. The model became especially associated with the American muscle-car era, making the name a possible tribute to an interest in cars or a family memory involving one. Its history as a personal name is therefore tied to a twentieth-century product name.

Chevelle is also the name of an American rock band, giving the spelling a second cultural association. Neither connection requires an ancient literal translation. In particular, the resemblance to French cheval, horse, should not be treated as proof that the given name is a traditional French word for a little horse. The vehicle and music connections provide the clearest documented background for this particular spelling.
