Cheyenne

Cheyenne is the English name of a Native American people with living communities, languages, and traditions. It is also familiar as a place name, including the city in Wyoming. As a given name, it refers to that people or a geographical association rather than meaning courageous, adventurous, or any other personality trait.

The Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes use Tsistsistas as a name for the Cheyenne people, reflecting a cultural history more specific than generic Western imagery. Chey is a possible short form, and Shyanne is an adapted spelling used as a first name. Parents may be drawn to the sound or a personal place connection while understanding the actual people behind the familiar English name.
