Christine

Christine belongs to the Christina name family and means Christian or follower of Christ. It is an established French form that also has a long history in English-speaking use. Its meaning is not identical to Christopher’s “Christ-bearer,” even though both names share a Christian linguistic and religious connection.

Christine Daaé in The Phantom of the Opera gives the name a notable literary and musical association. Stephen King’s novel Christine supplies a very different fictional reference. The final een sound distinguishes Christine from Christina’s a ending, while keeping the same central name family. Families can choose between them according to language, pronunciation, or a particular relative they wish to honor.
