Cindy

Cindy is most often an affectionate form of Cynthia, a Greek name meaning woman from Kynthos. Kynthos is a mountain on the island of Delos, and Cynthia became an epithet of Artemis in Greek tradition. The association with the goddess is cultural and mythological, while the literal name refers to the place.

Cindy can also shorten Lucinda, linking that branch with the Latin light-related name family of Lucia. It has a substantial independent life as a given name, recognizable through bearers such as model Cindy Crawford and singer Cyndi Lauper, who uses a variant spelling. Families may therefore choose Cindy on its own or connect it with one of two longer names whose histories differ.
