Clarissa

Clarissa is an elaborated form in the Clara name family, from Latin clarus, meaning “clear” or “bright.” It preserves that luminous meaning in a longer, three-syllable shape. Clara and Claire are related alternatives, while Clarissa has built a substantial history of its own rather than functioning only as a decorative version of another name.

Samuel Richardson’s novel Clarissa and Virginia Woolf’s Clarissa Dalloway give it especially strong literary associations. Clara Barton, founder of the American Red Cross, was born Clarissa Barton. Clary offers an informal nickname, and Clara can be used as a shortening when a family prefers it. Parents who enjoy literary names may find the connection appealing without expecting every bearer to resemble a particular fictional character.
