Colleen

Colleen comes from Irish cailín, meaning girl. The word itself contains an affectionate or diminutive ending and became a given name in English-speaking use, particularly among families expressing an Irish connection. Its history is therefore different from that of an ancient Irish personal name passed down unchanged through generations.

Coleen is another established spelling, while the double l in Colleen makes the familiar form easy to recognize. The meaning is direct, but a family's reason for choosing it may be a grandmother, another relative, or an attachment to Irish heritage. There is no need to give the name an elaborate symbolic translation: its story lies in an everyday Irish word becoming a personal name abroad.
